Travel in Issan - Northeastern Thailand
- Northeastern Thailand is Thailand's least traveled region.
Excellent archeological and nature destinations plus the opportunity to
see real Thai towns and villages. Larger cities have a range of nightlife
as well.
- Hotels are cheap in Issan. Prices range from Bt 300. Tourist class hotels in the Bt 600-900 range are prolific.
- Local Travel is best by bus and seelor.
- Nong Khai is located on the Mekong River across from
Vientiane, Laos. Several hotels and guest houses as well as a market. Not
as pleasant as it was before the publicity.
- Korat is the gateway to the Northeast. Large city with railway station and airport.
- Udorn Thani Popular with retired expats from the Vietnam era. Large town with a number of good hotels and some robust nightlife
- Khon Kaen Besides having the world's largest university
(in land area), the region has dinosaur relics discovered near Ubonratana
Dam. Area around Sofitel and Kosa is the nightlife area.
- Nakorn Phanom Sleepy and tranquil perched on the bank of the Mekong across from Tha Kaek, Laos. Several good hotels. Some tour operators claim they can conduct Laos tours.
- Mukduhan On the Mekong opposite Savannakhet, Laos.
Nice market along the river. A few reasonable hotels.
- Ubon Ratchathani Near the Mekong and north of the Cambodian border. A national park nearby has interesting geography. Petroglyphs on the cliffs along the river are a must see. The Mun river is a prime attraction.
- Buriram Larger town east of Korat
See and Do
- Phimai North of Korat, once a regional capitol of the
Khmer Empire. The ancient site is well regarded and reminiscent of Angkor.
- Ban Chiang an archeological site east of Udorn that
dates to the bronze age (3,500 B.C.). Small museum and pleasant village.
- Khao Yai National Park Excellent nature trails, waterfalls, campgrounds at Thailand's largest National Park. Expect to see wild animals, prolific bird species.
- Phanom Rung Near Buriram. Ancient temple site with some interesting astronomical design considerations
