Chiang Mai Thailand Travel Highlights
- Getting to Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai is served by air. Hourly flights take about 1.5 hours. Rail service is available from Hua Lamphong. Bus service is available from most points in Thailand.
- Taxi The transportation situation in Chiang Mai is in transition. Most prolific are Tuk-Tuks and red pickup trucks (seelors). Motorcycle rental is common .. bicycle rental less so because of increasing traffic
- Hotels in Chiang Mai cover the entire spectrum from Bt 120 per night guest houses to the Four Seasons in Mae Rim. Chiang Mai has many mid-range tourist hotels.
- Nature Chiang Mai has many opportunities for the
outdoor traveler. Doi Intanon is among the favorites, with 300+ species
of bird life. Rafting is popular during and shortly after the rainy
season. The Mae Taeng and Pai Rivers, as well as the Ob Luang Gorge
are popular.
- Shopping The area along Changklan Road is Chiang Mai's famous night market area. Sometimes the sidewalks are impassible because of the crowding of sidewalk vendor stalls.
The tour bus shopping circuit includes Borsang, Baan Tawai and San Khampaeng. There are few bargains here, however.
- Touring The areas around Chiang Mai make for some
interesting motorcycle rides, mountain biking and hill tribes trekking
- Hill Tribes Although less so than Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai has a large population of hill tribes. Akha, Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Hmong and Yao.

- Walking The old section of Chiang Mai, also referred
to as "inside the moat" is very walk able.
- Nightlife Chiang Mai is not Bangkok but it des have a fair share of nightlife. The beer bar areas include Moon Muang Road, Loi Kroh and the area behind the Night Bazaar and around the Chiang Inn. A few clubs and discos are scattered around as well, but its no RCA.
- Temples Chiang Mai has a number of worthwhile temples. The most popular, Doi Suthep, is located outside the city and worth the visit. Wat Jet Yod is another.
