Bangkok Travel Highlights
- Don Muang Airport, located north of the city is
a relatively easy airport to use. ATM's, currency exchange, taxi
service, limo service, bus service to Bangkok
- Taxi Meter From the airport expect to pay about
Bt 300 plus toll way charges. Basic charge (2 km) is Bt 35 then Bt
5/km. Avoid the touts with private cars.
- Hotels in Bangkok generally range from Bt 600. Tourist class hotels in the Bt 1000-1500 are prolific.
- Subway and Skytrain combine to offer an excellent alternative to taxis and buses. Air conditioned trains ferry passenger on a predictable schedule avoiding Bangkok traffic. Fares are are reasonable as evidenced by the number of working class Thais riding.
- Sukhumvit Road between Soi 1 and Soi 55 is generally
considered "downtown" for tourists. Shopping, hotels, entertainment,
restaurants. Street merchants sell everything from knock off watches
to sturdy but cheap clothing, bags, trinkets, sarongs .. you name
it. Nana
Plaza on Soi Nana is an adult entertainment complex. Soi
Cowboy is an adult area between Asoke and Soi 23.
- Silom Road is a well-known shopping area and more compact/shorter than Sukhumvit. One end of the infamous Patpong red light area opens to Silom.
- Pathumwan One of the more popular areas for tourists, with shopping as well as accommodations. The Pathumwan market is one of the bargain areas for inexpensive clothing. The World Trade Center is large high-end shopping plaza. Nanya Phand is a government sponsored store for Thai products of many types.
- Yawarat is Bangkok's Chinatown. Fine Chinese food, horrible traffic, great shopping and an experience not to be missed. Nearby Hua Lamphong train station and Banglampu (Khao San Rd).
- Ratchadapisek is emerging as a major upscale entertainment area. Royal City Avenue has a host of trendy clubs mostly frequented by Thais. Ratchadapisek is now easily accessible because of the subway system.
